Outside in Overlea: Sweet Nothings Book Store
The only thing better than a bookstore is a new bookstore that also sells plants! I came across this one while running errands and had to stop in.
The owner, Jade, welcomed my daughter and I into her quiet and so cute store and had great conversation. She told us the story of her journey to opening the store as well as her near future plans to expand.
What caught my attention was that she only sells romance novels. Admittedly, I’m not a romance reader at all, but I’m willing to try anything in support of literature, small business owners and community! Jade took the time to suggest some titles that cross into genres that I do like. THIS is why small local businesses will always be top tier to me. Ask an employee in Target for a good read based on your preferences and watch what happens. Her upcoming expansion will bring more genres and more events. She currently hosts author signings in addition to craft nights and social gatherings.
Reading and houseplants are major hobbies of mine, but that’s only a fraction of why I get so excited about seeing them in neighborhoods. Stores like these signal stability and intention. They foster connection and calm. They invite people to slow down, linger and interact. Unlike purely transactional businesses, bookstores encourage presence and conversation, which strengthens community bonds. I witnessed complete strangers talk like old friends while browsing Sweet Nothings. It was beautiful.
Independent bookstores and plants shops tend to thrive in areas where residents are invested in their surroundings. Neighborhoods that value walkability, creativity and long term roots. They show that the community prioritizes quality of life over convenience alone.
I enjoyed Sweet Nothings Bookstore in it’s current state and look forward to whats to come. Make time to stop in and grab a book, plant or one of the curated goods such as stickers, candles (made by Jade herself), jewelry etc. She had the cutest ‘plant daddy’ hat that I would have bought my husband if he would just take this plant life gang seriously. 🙄
